Welcome to our buying guide to Electric Bikes

Folding Electric Bikes Bikes

When considering a folding electric bike you will be looking to find a bike that has a light weight frame and battery. Some electric bikes fold in the centre and enable you to easily pop them into the boot of your car or into a bag to carry onto the train. They are an ideal solution if you work to far from home but want to commute part way to work. They can also be used for leisure activities such as caravanning, boating or camping allowing you to travel around easily once you get to your destination.

Low-step Electric Bikes

The low-step ebikes offer excellent flexibility for the less mobile to get their independence back enabling them to pop down to the shop, post office or for a light refreshment ! They have a low frame to help the rider to mount the bike with ease. They are also ideal for ladies wishing to travel to work but would like to wear clothes that might be limited by a higher frame.

Pedal Assisted Electric Bikes

Require that you to pedal before the motor kicks in. Some pedal assisted electric bikes have torque sensors which gauge how much assistance (if at all) is required. The motor cuts in and you glide almost effortlessly along. Some cheaper bikes have sensors which work alongside how fast the pedals are rotating

Throttle Assisted Electric Bikes

Are powered by throttle, you can use this bike like a conventional motor bike as you use the throttle you can happily sit and ride without effort at 15mph top speed. Throttle assisted electric bikes can also be assisted by the pedals.

The Rules

The bikes fall into two categories Pedal Assisted and Throttle Assisted.
But to avoid any taxation or Government paper work the bikes must comply as follows:
The bikes must weigh less than 40 kgs
The motor does not exceed 200w of continuous power
The bike is limited to 15 mph whilst using assisted power ( you can turn the power off and cycle unassisted as fast as you like!)
The cycle has working pedals
Riders need to be 14 years or over to ride on public roads. :

Batteries

Different specifications of batteries not only affect the price of the bike but obviously the performance. Higher wattage and amps can give more power to accelerate you up hills effortlessly. Saying this, if you live in a relatively flat area paying the extra for this performance would be unnecessary. The more powerful batteries can also give further distance between charges, but you may be happy with a distance of say, 10 miles of travel without pedalling. Prices depend on what you want to get out of the bike performance wise. The battery options are listed under each manufacturer.

Average Distance
The distances quoted can be affected by hills, head wind, bad road surfaces, weight of the rider and the weather. Electric bikes do not like very cold weather as it affects the chemistry of the battery and will stop the bike performing to its full capacity i.e. shorter distances.
